Angelina Jolie Had Double Mastectomy

Angelina Jolie announced last month that she had double mastectomy.

Jolie revealed last month that she had her breasts removed after discovering she has an inherited genetic mutation that puts her at high risk of breast and ovarian cancer.   She underwent a double mastectomy in February to eliminate her high risk of getting breast or ovarian cancer after learning that she carries a mutation of the BRCA1 gene, which sharply increases her risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.  BRCA stands for breast cancer susceptibility genes, a class of genes known as tumor suppressors, according to the National Cancer Institute.

"My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman," Jolie wrote. "Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy."

She discovered that she had an 87% chance of developing breast cancer and a 50% risk of getting ovarian cancer.  Her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died of ovarian cancer in 2007 and the actress' aunt died of breast cancer last month.

After her surgery, Jolie said her risk of developing breast cancer has dropped to less than 5%.

She made her public appearance on June 2 after the double mastectomy to support Brad Pitt at the premiere of zombie thriller World War Z in Leicester Square, London.
